This class is designed to give you a hands on experience in live musical theater. In partnership with the Rochester Broadway Theater League, we'll be actively involved with five live Broadway Musical Theater performances. Throughout the year we'll:

  • Study the original source or the literature that is representative of each show.
  • Learn about the historical and social issues that each show deals with.
  • Visit with representatives of the show - from actors and dancers to staghands.
  • Experience the process of transforming the written word into a theatrical production.
  • Dance, learn the music, and interact with the performers.
  • Explore the process of taking the written word and transforming it into a theatrical show.
  • Be involved as ushers.
  • Act.

During the year we'll seek to answer such questions as: Does an audience affect the actor's performance? Who are some of the most famous people in American Musical Theater? Has technology had an impact on live theater? What is the role of the producer? How are the issues of religion, ethnicity, lifestyles, love, obsession, creativity, history, culture, deceit, and family relationships portrayed in musical theater?...and many more. Be prepared to immerse yourself in a year of singing, dancing, reading, traveling to the theater, and becoming totally involved in taking it...FROM THE PAGE TO THE STAGE!

* There is a student cost of $15.00 for each show.
**Journal writing, reading novels, conferences, are all requirements for credit.
