May 3, 2002 - Budget Crisis - More Information

To: Friends of School Without Walls

Re: Budget Crisis - More Information

Some of you may be aware of the $64 million budget crisis the Rochester City School District is facing. The initial administrative recommendation to the School Board included the elimination or phasing-out of School Without Walls. That recommendation has been withdrawn by the Superintendent. Attached is a letter by 1976 SWW graduate Gretchen Van Ness to the Superintendent, arguing against his initial recommendation.

Also, for those folks in the Rochester, NY area, attached is a copy of a flier for a May 6th Forum, dealing with the problems of high-stakes standardized testing, at Monroe Community College. 1978 School Without Walls graduate & MCC Chair of Sociology, Anthropology, History and Political Science, Lauren Pivnick, is hosting and moderating the forum. Please attend if you can.
