C. Community Learning
beyond extended classes.
If you want to work with someone in the community, contact your advisor to help with the arrangements.
If you have found someone in the community who wants to work with you or others in the school, ask someone on the staff to help with the arrangements. You can earn credit for working with a community resource, but only if the activity is approved in advance - there can be no credit assigned retroactively.
In order to earn credit, a student must establish goals in cooperation with his/her advisor and the community resource through a written contract which includes - what you want to learn, how you will learn it, and how you will be evaluated. This should be decided along with the amount of time to be spent and the amount and kind of credit to be earned. (i.e. English, social studies, etc.)
A written evaluation from the community person based on the contract will be used by the student's academic advisor to make a final decision about credit. When a student wants to learn something that isn't taught by the staff of School Without Walls, the student and academic advisor will try to find a community resource to teach it. The school cannot promise that something will be found through this process. Students may have to find other ways to get what they want.
Once a program has been set up with a community person, it is very important that you follow through on your responsibilities: being on time, attending regularly (phone if you are going to be late or absent), being courteous, etc.
Our program depends on the community. If we do not cooperate, there is no reason why we should expect the community to work with us.
