The primary task of students at the Institute Level is to continue to develop the skills, content and requirements of SWW, earn academic credit complete and present portfolios and projects demonstrating their competency. To this end, they may continue to participate in supervised educational activities, but are also encouraged to work more independently. They may have open time in their class schedule during which they can work on independent study projects, participate in student-run seminars and study groups, work on open, self-paced lab or course requirements, etc. Institute Level students may engage in community or college based classes during the school day.

As students satisfy requirements and demonstrate responsibility, time-management, and independence they will discuss with their advisor their plans for remaining requirements and senior projects. Upon completion of requirements, an Institute student may seek admission to Senior Institute.
