THE SENIOR PROJECT
A School Without Walls Graduation Requirement
The Senior Project is important because it demonstrates that you have mastered the learning process that the School Without Walls has been trying to teach you during your time here. (See the School Without Walls GOALS, particularly sections C and D under I.) It is this process that is important, perhaps more important than the product itself. You should clearly demonstrate that you have been able to define a problem clearly; that you are able to understand the difference between product and process; that you understand the importance of the form in which you present your work.
WHY?
We believe that a good high school is one whose graduates can learn and live productively in the community. We believe that learning is a lifelong problem-solving process, so everything at School Without Walls is designed to foster and build independent learning and problem solving skills.
WHAT MUST IT BE?
- It must be the student's idea and should not be something you have already learned to do well.
- It must be well thought out.
- It must yield a product which clearly demonstrates growth on the part of the student and the development of newly acquired skills or expertise.
- In the process of completing the senior project, the student must demonstrate acceptance of responsibility in meeting the terms of the proposal
- It must be completed with regular consultation with a senior project advisor
- It must be completed during the school year in which it is proposed; there can be NO CARRY-OVER of a senior project from one year to the next. If you do not complete your senior project or if your project is rejected by the committee, you must propose a new project for the next school year. You cannot take more than one academic year to complete the project.
NOTE: The Senior Project may be creditable as a part of extended class or as a fully independent activity. If you desire credit, you must complete a Proposal for Independent Study and attach it to your Senior Project Proposal.
